The ‘ Fly for Peace’ event was held in Trapani, Sicily on July 18-20th 2014. Br. Benedict Ayodi OFM Cap of the JPIC office represented the general minister- Br. Mauro at the event. The mission of the Fly for peace project is to promote peace, respect for the dignity and rights of every human being. In the “Spirit of Assisi” the project strives to build ways towards dialogue and love of neighbor in the wider Mediterranean region. To achieve this goal, the association for ‘fly for peace’ that includes different agencies (includes the CFF, Universities, Italian Municipalities, Pontifical council of JPIC, Diocese, the Italian military, and OFMCapuchins) held a three day peace event in Erice, Trapani.
The events began on 17th July with an interview on the mission of ‘ Fly for Peace’ by the TeleSud TV in Trapani. Those interviewed included Br. Antonio Tofanelli OFMCap, President of ‘Fly for peace’, msgr. Domenico Mogavero Bishop of Mazara, Alberto Moretti commander, coodinator of the air show and Br. Benedict Ayodi OFMcap of JPIC OFMCap.
The events officially began on Friday 18th with the “Dialogue of Peace” held at the Center for Scientific Culture “Attire Majorcan” in Erice. The following core elements were discussed: Abraham, Father of Believers; The gift of peace; The Mediterranean sea of peace; To the Confines of Peace. Of much interest was the dialogue talks between Ashraf Al-Ajrami (Palestinian) and Benjamin Rutland (Israelian), they both highlighted the current conflict in Israel and Gaza and appealed for international support to reach an immediate ceasefire and lasting peace for the region. On Saturday afternoon, the Pepoli Tower was inaugurated in Erica, restored to be a Lighthouse of Peace, through an interactive museum multimedia. From the early hours of Saturday, the “Village of Peace” was opened in the square of Vittorio Emanuele of Trapani, where the show “Together for Peace” was shown.
On Sunday 20 at 11 AM Mass was celebrated in the square of Trapani, presided by Msgr. Pietro Maria Fragnelli, Bishop of Trapani, with a community committed to pray for peace. Pope Francis sent a message of peace “I hope that ‘Fly for Peace’ helps to promote the awareness of the universal values of Peace and Solidarity”. The three day event was crowned by the Air Show that performed on the seafront in Trapani combined with the Frecce Tricolori aerobatic teams of some Europen countries and the Mediterranean before tens of thousands of viewers.
